I usually treat “bold new concepts” with a touch of suspicion, especially if they profess to seamlessly blend style and dancing with top notch cuisine.
In my experience, “exclusive VIP venue” tends to mean “overpriced hell-hole full of flash gits” – usually with terrible food to match. Alas, it doesn’t matter how swanky the surroundings are, how dressy the clientele and extensive the cocktail list because in the final analysis, the taste buds don’t lie – the undoing of many a central London venue.
Fortunately, Embassy Lounge’s polished take on Indian Cuisine cannot be faulted.
The classic chicken tikka was a cracking starter – succulent and rich with a touch more spice than usual. The meat is marinated overnight and you can taste the difference.
More unusual still was my partner’s vegetable Manchurian – balls of mixed vegetables and spice, deep- fried and served with spring onion and soya sauce. It is not a dish often found in the capital’s curry houses and more’s the pity.
My main course of spring lamb curry was another fresh and feisty dish – a well balanced, rich and punchy sauce on tender meat off the bone.
Embassy Lounge has great food and a polished well laid out ambience.
Taking Indian food out of the dingy curry house and into a swish, over 21’s club that parties to R n B and funky house, on the weekend is a gamble that seems to have paid off. This is one “bold new concept” that breaks the mould. |
